On global warming, world renowned ecologist David Suzuki warned “Australia is especially vulnerable. Your whole country is bordered by the ocean, sea levels are rising, half your country is desert, that desertification is going to continue.”

FUR

FASHION STATEMENT OR CRUEL VANITY?

“A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.”

 - St Basil

Over 300 Designers Are Using Fur In Their Collections.

“On the image front, public sympathy for the animal rights message has waned at the same time as fur has been re-embraced by the fashion world.” Excerpt from an article promoting the fur industry 2005.

Each year, approximately 30 million animals are raised in tiny cages on fur farms around the world. For minks and foxes which do not adapt to life in captivity,  this type of intensive confinement often results in self-mutilation, cannibalism,  high-level stress, and many developing foot problems from continuously standing on the wire of their small cages.  They are usually  killed  using electrocution through the anus so their pelt is left unmarked. Leading countries that produce mink pelts include Denmark (12.6 million slaughtered in 2003), followed by China (5 million), Holland (3.25 million) and the U.S. (2.3 million.) and Finland is the leading producer of ranch-raised fox with 2.3 million killed last year. Other animals killed include two million dogs and cats, and over 600,000 chinchillas, polecats and raccoons.

Worldwide, there are approximately 10 million wild animals trapped and killed exclusively for their fur each year.

Over 300 fashion designers are currently working with fur including Oscar de la Renta, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Gucci, Michael Kors, Karl Lagerfeld, Yves St Laurent, Valentino and Versace and Beyonce Knowles’ fashion house.

Millions of dogs and cats in China are bludgeoned, hung, bled to death, and strangled with wire nooses so that their fur can be turned into trim and trinkets. This fur is often deliberately mislabeled as fur from other species and then exported to the United States and Australia to be sold.

Welsh say 'no' to fur at fashion week

AN OVERWHELMING 97% of the Welsh public has said they refuse to wear real fur.

The figures come from an RSPCA-commissioned survey to coincide with the start of London Fashion Week.

Only 3% of Welsh people said they would be prepared to don real fur.

The regional breakdown of the figures differed only slightly with the vast majority of people saying they would refuse to wear real fur.

In London 87% said they would refuse to wear it, 98% would refuse in Yorkshire and Humberside and 95% would refuse in the Midlands.

The poll also found 92% of people think that both real and fake fur should be clearly labelled.

Six out of 10 people said they do not think celebrities should wear real fur and 61% thought there was a moral difference between animals that are farmed for meat and those that are farmed for fur.

And 91% of those questioned said they would not consider buying real fur even if it is available very cheaply.

David Bowles, RSPCA head of external affairs, said, "An overwhelming majority of the public are opposed to the disgusting and cruel practice of farming or trapping animals for their fur."

Knowing no other life than behind the bars of its’ tiny cage, this fox’s haunted look reveals its’ suffering. These animals are under constant stress, anguish, and physical discomfort, continuously surrounded by the smells and sounds of death.

One of the fur industries “waste dumps” - a mound of dead foxes, their carcasses left to rot after slaughter and “harvesting”.

To preserve these fur animals’ pelts,  they are killed using the following cruel and torturous methods—hot poker into the anus, electrocution through the anus, throats or tongues cut and bled to death, neck dislocation, clubbing, gassing, drowning and strangulation.

Fur is marketed as a symbol of prestige, glamour and success. The treatment and disposal of these animals screams of disrespect and  cruelty in name of human vanity. There are plenty of warm and chic alternatives.  A fur coat is a badge of dishonour and disgrace to anyone who wears it. This “fashion-statement” belongs to the caveman and has no place in a  civilized, compassionate society.

In the sixties and seventies, around 18,000 jaguars were killed every year for their much-sought-after pelt.  The designer of the original jaguar coat worn by Jackie Onassis, was so shocked by what he felt was his contribution to putting jaguars on the endangered list, he stopped designing with fur completely.

The dead bears pictured left, and below, were killed for their fur. The English monarchy still uses real bear fur for their personal guards’ tall black hats.
