War—What is it good for?

US researchers estimate that 655,000 Iraqis, or around one in 40 of the Iraq population, have died as a result of the 2003 invasion of their country, according to a study published by the British journal The Lancet.

“Entire households could have been killed, leading to survivor bias."

"Although such death rates might be common in times of war, the combination of a long duration and tens of millions of people affected has made this the deadliest international conflict of the 21st century,"

“May there only be peaceful and cheerful Earth Days to come for our beautiful Spaceship Earth as it continues to spin circles in frigid space with its warm and fragile cargo of animate life.”  United Nations Secretary-General 1971

The Body Shop, which has maintained an “against animal testing” stance throughout its long and fruitful life, has now been sold to L’oreal—widely known for its uncompromising pro-animal testing policy.

L’oreal also owns Maybelline, Rimmel, Covergirl, Aveda and many more cosmetic companies that state they do not test on animals but provide consumer dollars to their parent company which invariably does. However, there are many other cosmetic companies that definitely do not test on animals such as Attitudeline, Avon, Lush, Earth’s Beauty, Jurlique, Sundog, Sukin,  Trilogy, Perfect Potion, Natio, L’Occitanne, Vitale, and Innoxa.

Every year, World Laboratory Animal Week helps raise awareness about the millions of dogs, cats, monkeys and other animals who suffer cruel torture and death in laboratories all over the world, when there are more efficient, cheaper, humane and speedy alternatives! For more information on the topic of animal testing click here.

Let’s be politically correct. The below heading should read The Ten Native American Commandments, and the last directive should read, instead of mankind, humankind.

On Making a Difference —

The Story of the Starfish

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young man paused, looked up, and replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”

“I must ask then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented,” But young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, “It made a difference for that one.”

Words of Wisdom

After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand, and chaining a soul,

And company doesn’t mean security…

And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts,

And present aren’t promises,

And you begin to accept your defects with your head held up and your eyes open,

With the Grace of a woman—not the grief of a child,

And you learn to build all your roads on today,

Because tomorrows ground is too uncertain for plans,

And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.

And after a while you learn that even sunshine burns

...if you get too much

So you plant your own garden

And decorate your own soul,

Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers

And you learn that you really can endure,

And you really are strong,

And that you really do have worth,

And you learn, and you learn…

Grow and blossom

be happy.’

IF I HAD MY CHILD TO RAISE OVER AGAIN

I’d finger paint more, and point the finger less.

I’d do less correcting, and more connecting.

I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I would care to know less, and know to care more.

I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.

I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.

I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.

I’d do more hugging and less tugging.

I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.

I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.

I’d teach less about the love of power,

And more about the power of love!

- Diane Loomans

“Oh, if a tree could wander

And move with foot and wings!

It would not suffer the axe blows

And not the pain of saws!

- Rumi

Found

I was walking in the woods

Just on a whim of mine,

And seeking nothing,

That was my intention.

In the shade I saw

A little flower standing

Like stars glittering

Like beautiful little eyes.

I wanted to pick it

When it said delicately:

Should I just to wilt

Be picked?

I dug it out with all

Its little roots,

To the garden I carried it

By the lovely house.

And replanted it

In this quiet spot;

Now it keeps branching out

And blossoms ever forth.

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
