Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince

(M—Fantasy Violence 153 minutes)

It is Harry’s 6th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Professor Snape has become the Defence Against the Arts Teacher and Harry is now the favourite student of the new potions teacher played by Jim Broadbent. Malfoy has been enlisted by Lord Valdemort in a secret mission. And love, and potion-induced love, is in the air!

Director David Yates, responsible for Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, also directed this film. He has also has been recruited as director for the last instalment of the Harry Potter series.

While The Order of the Phoenix was a bit of a disappointment, especially compared to the amazing HP films—The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire, this film definitely does not disappoint. Although The Half-Blood Prince is much darker - visually and emotionally than the other HP films, this film is also balanced by episodes of real joviality and fun. The regular cast definitely display their talents in this film, and new cast additions are also excellent.

As an admirer of the HP books, I realize some Harry Potter fans may be disappointed that some  parts of the book are not included, but the story elements that are most crucial to the journey of Harry Potter are included in this thrilling film adventure.

Cast includes Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Jim Broadbent, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Tom Felton.

Exciting, funny and dark. - a great instalment in the Harry Potter series!

ICE AGE

The Dawn of the Dinosaurs

(PG —Mild scary scenes & crude humour 1hr 34 minutes)

The sub-zero heroes from the worldwide blockbusters "Ice Age" and "Ice Age: The Meldown" are back, on an incredible adventure. Scrat is still trying to nab the ever-elusive nut (while, maybe, finding true love); Manny and Ellie await the birth of their mini-mammoth, Sid the sloth gets into trouble when he creates his own makeshift family by hijacking some dinosaur eggs; and Diego the saber-toothed tiger wonders if he's growing too "soft" hanging with his pals

Although the first Ice Age was extremely funny, and at times moving, the second in this series lacked the same depth and joy, however The Dawn of the Dinosaurs brings back all the fun and adds a dose of excitement and adventure.

The animation is spectacular, and Sid’s scenes with the dinosaur babies are absolutely hilarious.

The voice cast include Ray Romano, John  Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Sean William Scott, Josh Peck, Chris Wedge, Simon Pegg, Karen  Disher and Bill Hader

Hilarious, loads of fun and a great ride!

Three and a half stars.

Eastern Promises R 18+ (high level violence) (1Hr 39 Mins) (Now on DVD)

A classy film—disturbingly violent—but a “killer” plot with a twist and satisfying conclusion.

Eastern Promises focuses on contemporary society’s white slave trade and sex market, concentrating on the Russian mafia and its exploits in London. This new thriller from director, David Cronenberg re-teams him with his A History of Violence leading man, Viggo Mortensen. The film follows the mysterious and ruthless Nikolai (Mortensen), who is tied to one of London’s most notorious organised crime families. His carefully maintained existence is jarred when he crosses paths with Anna (Naomi Watts), an innocent midwife trying to right a wrong, who accidentally uncovers potential evidence against the family.

This extremely violent film delivers, with an amazing script and plot. Excellent direction and  well-fleshed out characters gave this film a realism and believability that had me glued until the end.

A word of warning , if you are squeamish like me, you might want to cover your eyes when someone pulls out a long barber’s razor. And the nude fight scene with Viggo Mortensen is extremely frightening and gory (I actually had my eyes closed for this  scene, because for me, sharp knives and male nudity are two things that do not go well together– ouch!)

Superbly acted and directed, this film is well-worth seeing if you have the stomach for it.
