MESSAGE FROM

THE HUMANE SOCIETY

Recently the Humane Society International's ProtectSeals team escorted British actor Alison Steadman and "America's Next Top Model" judge and fashion photographer Nigel Barker to the Canadian ice floes. They came to experience the beauty of the harp seal nursery and to shine a spotlight on the enormous potential for eco-tourism in the region, as well as the impending slaughter of these young pups.

Today, I invite you to join Alison, Nigel and everyone on our ProtectSeals team in our efforts to spread the word about this cruelty.

Many people still do not realize that Canadian fishermen brutally kill hundreds of thousands of baby seals every year, just for their fur. They are set to slaughter 275,000 this year alone.

One important way that you can help is by signing our petition calling on European legislators to ban the seal product trade.

Right now, the European Commission is considering proposing a ban on seal product trade in the European Union -- a move many believe could spell the end of commercial seal hunting globally. We need people all over the world to sign our petition urging the EU to ban its trade in all seal products now.

After you've signed, please take ProtectSeals Petition Challenge and ask all of your friends and family to sign, too.

The five people who recruit the most new pledge signers will win a new seals T-shirt designed by Nigel. Everyone who invites their friends to sign the petition can download some of Nigel's beautiful seal photos for their computer wallpaper.

Your involvement during these next few weeks is critical -- because our campaign is starting to achieve real results:

· Global markets for seal products are closing.

· Prices paid to sealers are falling.

· Governments are condemning commercial seal hunting.

· The ProtectSeals boycott of Canadian seafood is gaining momentum.

· Canadians are speaking out against the seal hunt.

It only takes a few minutes to speak up for baby seals. If we all act now, this spring's Canadian hunt may be the last commercial seal hunt any of us ever has to witness.

Sincerely

Andrew Rowan

International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) monitors were present on the opening day of the Gulf seal hunt to witness the cruel mass slaughter of baby harp seals in Canada.

“The sealing vessel had to search out small pans of ice to find a few lone seals. Sealers fired at seals on slushy, moving ice. Seals were seen in agony after being shot at and injured, but not instantly killed. One seal was hauled alive onto the deck of the boat with a steel hook before finally being beaten to death.”

“The lack of ice in the Southern Gulf has led to a mortality rate for baby seals estimated to exceed 90%, yet sealers continued to wipe out the last remaining survivors. They can do this because, despite the tragic effect of global warming on seal breeding habitat, the Canadian government has given sealers permission to kill 270,000 seals.”

Visit StoptheSealHunt today to help the seal pups and read the latest diaries from IFAW monitors on the scene of the hunt. See the latest footage from the scene of the hunt and listen to IFAW monitors describe in their own words the cruelty they are documenting firsthand.

Scroll down to very bottom of this page if you wish to view photos of what is actually happening on the ice flows. The photos show men killing these gentle animals “for fun” (trophy hunters who obviously see themselves as “real men” because they can club a helpless animal to death) as well as men taking part in the fur hunt. Be warned the images are extremely graphic .

A mother seal and her slaughtered pup.

A seal dying a slow, painful death, breathing blood and crying tears of  blood.

All this animal can do to protect itself  and its’ baby from this “man” with a club, is to cry out in anger and fear.

It may take more than one hit with the club before this animal is finally dead. Some animals are skinned while still alive.

A mother’s kiss to reassure its baby… soon the trophy hunter (below) arrives to club them to death.

A man whose only claim to fame is beating to death an  animal with no means of defending itself— a “real” man—a “sportsman”?!!

Here we have an aerial view of the seal massacre in progress. The seals without any real means of escape can only watch and wait until its their, and their babies, turn to be bludgeoned to death, or skinned alive while in the process of dying.

Text Box: We have the means to stop this barbaric practice. Firstly, by refusing to buy seal fur and other seal products. If there is no monetary value to their deaths, they will no longer be slaughtered. Secondly we can sign petitions, write to governments and let others know what is going on. The only voice these animals have in the human world is our voice, our actions.
