"Secret Armageddon" - Chapter 2 (Sample Chapter)

Monday prior to opening day

The sign, which was to announce to the town of New Thought that there was a new ministry opening up, was nowhere to be seen. Aaron Masters the newly ordained minister of the Center looked up at the space where the sign, which had been ordered six weeks ago, should have been installed. Acme Sign Company had promised that the sixteen by four foot sign would be completed and installed several days earlier. The electricians had done their part during the previous week, installing two spotlights that would illuminate the words NEW THOUGHT METAPHYSICAL CENTER painted in bright blue lettering against a white background.

Now, the only way anyone would know he was “open for business” was if they had read the three by six inch advertisement in the town weekly or read the kind words of welcome in the Religion Corner of the same paper. The columnist, Reverend Peter Benson, a Lutheran minister described the Center as “a place where the human spirit comes under the microscope of science, with positive results”. Apparently, Reverend Benson had perused The Church of the Ancient Mystics’ web site prior to writing his column. Aaron was pleased that the Reverend had chosen those particular words. All too often the organized religions of a town attacked the Centers as hostile to Christianity. With Reverend Benson, at least, this appeared not to be the case.

Aaron opened the front door and breathed in the odor of fresh paint. In return for a three year lease on the building, the landlord had agreed to paint the interior of the building and to apportion the three thousand square foot space into a an assembly area with a 12X20 foot platform, a small rest room, several storage closets, an office, nursery and a book store/lending library. A local funeral parlor chain generously donated sixty-six padded chairs from one of their closed facilities. The chairs were like brand new and were already set up in the assembly area in eight rows of eight with the two extras placed on the platform to the left of where the dais will stand and facing the congregation.

He walked past the row of coat racks and pamphlet tables along the wall of the main hall as he made his way to his office at the rear of the building. Boxes of books lined the walls of the room encircling a new four drawer desk and executive arm chair. Not too shabby! No window, but with a few pictures on the wall, this will be quite comfortable.

The high-speed internet and digital phone were scheduled to be installed early Tuesday morning, electricity and water were already connected and the two side chairs for his office were to be delivered by the end of the week. There was nothing left to do now, but unpack and get set up for business. Oh, yes, I better check on that sign. I’d hate to conduct my first service without that sign up.

Aaron took his cell phone from his coat and dialed the Acme Sign Company. “Nate, please.”

After several minutes, Nate came to the phone. “Nate Silverman, what can I do for you?”

“Nate, this is Reverend Masters at the New Thought Metaphysical Center, calling about my sign. It was supposed to be installed by now.”

“Aw, gee, Reverend, I’m really sorry about this. I tried to call you, but I guess you haven’t got a phone hooked up yet. We had your sign ready to go, but a clamp that was holding it during the sealing process broke and the sign fell and cracked. We’re working on the replacement, but it won’t be ready until next Monday at the earliest. You can’t rush the process with outdoor signs. You have my guarantee that it will be up by the middle of next week. That’s the best I can do. I’m sorry, but things happen sometimes when you speed up an order.”

Aaron decided that nothing would be gained by reminding Nate that the sign had been ordered over six weeks ago.

“Nate, that’s very disappointing. You promised that sign for last week. I’m opening the Center this weekend. How’s it going to look without that sign? I think the least you can do is discount the price for the inconvenience that you have caused.”

“Sure, Reverend, that’s only fair, since it is our fault. How about I knock off ten percent? Will that do it?”

“Yes, I appreciate that, Nate. Please do your best to make sure we have our sign by early next week.”

“You have my word on it, Reverend. You have a good day, now.”

“You have one too, Nate.”

It was obvious to Aaron that he would have to be patient, but patience was not one the virtues that Aaron had much experience with. As a young child he was a frequent visitor to the principal’s office. A fast learner, he exhibited a lack of respect for slower students as well as for his teachers. Despite this, he graduated at the top of his class in both elementary and high school and with honors from Wellington College; his major, marketing. For the next eight years he held jobs with four companies, selling industrial hardware, bicycle parts, sportswear and books. It was the last position, Midwest Regional Sales Manager for Brigham Books,  that led him to the Church of the Ancient Mystics.

During his first sales call, the procurement manager saw a spark of interest in the young salesman and over the next nine months, and after many hours of discussions; he convinced Aaron that he would have a future with the Church. Aaron resigned from his job, applied was accepted for training at the Church’s theological school and three years later, at the age of thirty-three,  he was ordained as a Minister of the Church of the Ancient Mystics.

Aaron Vernon Masters is a six foot, two inch, Ohioan, weighing just under two hundred pounds. He comes across more as an academic, than as a man’s man. He has no interest in sports and less in politics, but somehow, through all that, he is still a “people person”, having an innate ability to put people at ease. When he speaks with a person, be it man or woman, they get the feeling that he genuinely cares for them and about what they are opining; he seems to be looking into their minds and hearts. This attribute is very highly valued by the Church and is one that promises to serve the new minister well as he begins the building process at the New Thought Metaphysical Center, a teaching outreach of the Church of the Ancient Mystics located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Hampton Manor is peopled with flawed, but well-meaning characters. Emotionally suspenseful and compelling.
