"Kingdom Animalia" by Gwion
A musical recording project to celebrate the Ancient knowledge,
wisdom and magic of the animals from the Celtic realm.. . Gwion is well beloved and experienced Welsh multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Richard Price working with an assortment of musical friends, both old and new. He is best known for his performances on the medieval bagpipes of Brittany and England, and the sharing of ancient community based dances from around the world.
Seeking Crowdsource funding through Kickstarter to create a wonderful, and unusual musical recording called "Kingdom Animalia." The project is in some small way an opportunity to redress the balance of all the songs about animals from the traditional song repertoire of the British Isles. In virtually every song that I researched for this project, the animal ultimately dies at the violent hand of a human. This collection CELEBRATES the majesty and nobility of the animals from the Celtic realm. . . "Kingdom Animalia" is a musical celebration of the inherent knowledge, wisdom and magic of the animals who inhabit the Celtic realm. It's a collection of songs from the tradition of the British Isles, plus newly written material which present the splendor of a particular animal. . My current home is in New England in the USA, and I will be using local studios and musical friends to create a sublime, final production. .
I chose to create "Kingdom Animalia" because of a lack of positive songs about animals in the tradition of the British Isles. Only one song in this collection ends with the death of the animal at the centre of the tale - I chose to include it to give an example of the way that these songs usually turn out - and because it's actually a beautiful song despite the ending. . .
If you love the idea of positive songs about the animals that share the planet with us, please contribute, share on Twitter, FaceBook or by email. .
“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate for having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein do we err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings: they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.”― Henry Beston, The Outermost House: A Year of Life On The Great Beach of Cape Cod .
The design for the "Gwion ~ Adventures In Shapeshifting" T-shirt reward - You can also get it black text on white! “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” ― Mahatma Gandhi Gwion's Website Gwion's Facebook page Richard Price's Website Cover artist Sue Wookey's blog Sue's Shop . Risks and challenges - Learn about accountability on Kickstarter I (Richard) can't foresee any ~ the traditional songs are collected and the new songs are written. I have made demos of all the songs, so I know that they work. Now I am in the studio recording tracks. The only minor challenge that I foresee is getting the musicians into the studio on the correct days. Rounding up musicians is like herding cats! . |
